Actively combating natural calamities in the State is the main responsibility of the Department of Disaster Management& Civil Defence. West Bengal is including man-made/natural calamities. This Department, with its expertise, undertakes prevention activities and steps to mitigate and coordinate timely rescue and relief operation to minimize the loss of lives and property by playing the role as the principal coordinating agency for Disaster Management in the State, takes active part in post-disaster reconstruction and rehabilitation work with other Departments concerned. The Department also assists the common people by issuing timely warnings to minimize the loss caused by various natural disasters to the vulnerable area & population.

Beside this awareness and capacity building of all stakeholders has been significantly taken into account as the tool of mitigation and preparedness measure to combat disaster in a different manner. Training of local stakeholders are being organized in a comprehensive manner through out the year in coordination with different agencies.
